I just picked up Auto Modellista for PS2 last weekend. I’ve put in a few hours on it and guess what? It’s fucking amazing!.
Now don’t get me wrong this is a VERY hard game to play because the steering is VERY (VERY!) touchy. Tap the directional buttons just a little too hard and in the wall you go. But once you get used to the touchiness it is actually a WHOLE lot of fun to play.
This game is so obviously designed with Anime in mind. You are essentially playing and Initial D anime cartoon. The graphics are cel shaded and that is why I find this game so interesting. It really feels like you are playing some Japanese arcade style game.
It also features a VERY diverse car selection. it has everything from a Suzuki Alto Works to a Mitsuoka Orochi,Dodge Viper,Dome Zero and more.
This is what the actual gameplay looks like.
A short clip of it here.
For the $10 bucks I spent on this game it was worth every single penny. And I would recommend it to anyone who is into Anime or weird japanese car games. For me this is a must have in my PS2 collection.

I remember when this game first came out. If I remember correctly, it was one of the first online-enabled PS2 games. From what I heard, everyone just rode the walls online haha. It’s a very distinctive game, though!

KEEP ROCKIN’, BABY!
This game is great if you thought the announcer in Daytona USA wasn’t enthusiastic enough.

You know what is sad? The Alto Works in this looks better than the Alto Works in Gran Turismo 6.
Legend.

and the graphics are even way crisper than that photo shows. It’s a pretty low res picture that I expanded to fit the screen.
But yikes if that really is GT6 that’s pretty fucking terrible.

I loved this game when it came out. I even bought the promo version with key chain when it launched.

I never played it when I was younger. Honestly I never even knew about it until 2 weeks ago. It’s the kind of game you play that is just fun no matter what the outcome. oh you spun out and hit the wall and you have no possible way of catching up again? No problem just restart and do it again. I never got really frustrated playing it. I just smiled and carried on.

I considered getting this game recently, having played some old Gran Turismo and Enthusia. But the physics look awful, that put me off. I’ve played some Initial D games that don’t even feel close to real, is this like that?

Who said I was young ? ;) I I probably bought this when I was 19 or 20. I think it was after GT3, but before GT4 came out for PS2. I think, don't quote me on that. Certainly a forgotten fun game. I should see if I still have it or if it's on the PSN store.

The physics really are terrible but once you get used to it, it’s what sort of makes it fun. It’s hard to explain but sometimes we take games way too seriously. This game just makes you smile and laugh most of the way thru.
it’s an entertainment game nothing more. If you can’t stand anything less than a racing sim then this is definitely not for you. It really does feel like you are racing in a cartoon.

I’m playing it again emulated on the PC since my PS2 was stolen a few years ago and my Ps3 FAT died.
It looks ten times better on the emulator, and you can even run it on real 1080p :D

I see. I might like it. It’s treading a thin line though I think. I’ll pick it up one day :)
